My T-Shirt From The Vigil |
Our Memories of the John Lennon Vigil in Nashville By Pat Adams & Cynthia Harrington The Nashville "John Lennon Vigil" was held on December 14, 1980, about a week after the tragic death of Beatle, John Lennon. The vigil was held on the grounds of the 103 KDF radio station; Nashville's rock station back in that day. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were on their way home from a recording session in the evening when John Lennon was gunned down entering the Dakota Apartments in New York City, where they lived. Nashville was one of the cities that participated in this worldwide event. At 2pm New York time and 1pm Nashville time, there was a ten minute silent prayer at the request of Yoko Ono Lennon. A large crowd, still in shock, gathered in silence during the ten minute vigil. TV cameras scanned the crowd, including one that was part of a nationwide broadcast. Local band The Piggies honored the music of John Lennon and The Beatles on the rooftop of the KDF radio station studios. My wife, Cynthia and I had just gotten married; happy days turned to into sad. We attended the vigil and these are our memories of it, 39 years later (2019) |
