Back in the 1980's, I got
involved with the local
Nashville music scene
after co-hosting the
Creekers Ball with an
old friend.
Our goal was to showcase
local Nashville bands in
a concert type setting.
Danny had seven acres
of land which included a
large log cabin in the River
Road area of Nashville
and Ashland City. We
booked a full days worth
of local bands and
entertainers, which was
the beginning of the
Creekers Ball, a charity
event. The first year the
bands just played on the
grass on a hill with no
stage. We brought in beer
and soft drinks as part of
the admission price and
had quite a large crowd.
The second year we had a
stage built and an even
larger crowd.
We booked the Winters
Brothers Band and many
other local acts. Each year
the Creekers Ball got
bigger. We eventually
moved it to a River Road
bar which had enough
land behind it to hold the
crowd, as well as being
able to sell the beer and
drinks, something that we
couldn't do at the original
sight. Although, the
Creekers Ball ended in the
late 80's, I still have the all
of the original videos from
these jam's, some of which
myself and others have
posted on YouTube.
From there, I went on to do
the same with local bands
at various venues around
town in the 80's and 90's,
usually video taping these
events.
In 2006, I was contacted
by the hosts of a local
rock 'n' roll musicians jam,
asking me to participate.
The jam had just started at
a studio near the Nashville
Fairgrounds. One of the
hosts had played in the
Charlie Daniels Band
around 1974, playing on
a few of Charlie Daniels
early hits including
Souths Gonna Do It and
Long Haired Country Boy.
I got involved with the jam
promoting, photographing,
making music videos, and
playing music. In 2007.
These jams came to an
end after the lease ran out
at the studio.
A few of us decided to
bring back the Musicians
Jam in 2008 to local
Nashville venues where
beer, drinks and food
could be served at these
events. I hosted some of
these jams, as well as
sponsoring the jams with
my Tennessee Concerts
website.
We first took it to Windows
Off The Cumberland on
Second Avenue until the
venue shut down.
In 2009, we then took the
jam to the Elysian Inn, a
local south Nashville bar
and grill. We began to
have large crowds at these
events. My old friend
Donnie Winters from the
Winters Brothers Band
showed up to play. He had
played at the Creekers
Ball many years earlier.
Others showed up
including singer songwriter
Mac Gayden, Barry
Barnes (Charlie Daniels
Band), a reunion of the
1970's band Pacific Gas &
Electric, plus many others.
We had many other
musicians that had played
with well known acts
including Taylor Swift,
Coven, Crystal Gayle,
Bon Jovi, Rick Derringer,
Jerry Lee Lewis, The
Platters, Four Tops, Taj
Mahal, Molly Hatchett,
Lita Ford, Dolly Parton,
Sam & Dave, Leon Russell,
Percy Sledge, Blackfoot,
Robert Palmer, Boz
Scaggs, Hank Williams Jr,
Donna Fargo, Toby Keith,
Johnny Rodriguez, and
JJ Cale and others.
The Elysian Inn eventually
closed down, and we
moved it to J.C. Bullseye
Lounge in Hermitage.
We had some great jams
at J.C. Bullseye, including
many of the musicians that
had played at previous
jams. We had plans to live
stream the jam on the
internet, as well as a
Nashville cable access TV
show. Unfortunately, the
jam ended in 2011.
During my time of working
with local musicians, I have
shot hundreds of music
videos including the jams.
In 2010, Carol Alger had
joined me as writer &
photographer on my
Tennessee Concerts
website. She also joined
me with my SonicBids
Tennessee Concerts Song
Contest as a promoter and
judge, hosting worldwide
song contests. Winners
of our contests have gone
on to land publishing
contracts. One winner
went on to open for Ted
Nugent on his 2010 tour,
just months after winning
the contest. Sponsors
have included George
Lawrence from the popular
country-rock band Poco
and others.
Carol and I plan to start a
Nashville cable access TV
show in the near future,
promoting local music,
concerts and more
including pictures, videos,
and memorabilia from my
decades of involvement
with the local music scene,
as well as my Tennessee
Concerts website.
