In 2006, I got involved with the “Play It again Jam” a Nashville rock & roll musicians jam, with Gary Allen (formally of the Charlie Daniels Band, JJ Cale & Stonewall Jackson)
See our new “Play It Again Jam” website, from the continuing Nashville rock ‘n’ roll musicians jam. The Play It Again Jam started in 2006 at a recording studio near the Nashville Fairgrounds. With the jam now at Windows Off The Cumberland, 2009 brings the beginning of our fourth year. We started with posting only still pictures. We then moved up to bad quality videos with no sound. We eventually went to good quality videos with sound, and now posting jam videos on YouTube. 2009 bring the jam it’s own website, with matching t-shirts and business cards, eventually. What’s next, a live internet feed from the jam. Who knows. My TennesseeConcerts.com website will continue to post pictures and videos of all of the Play It Again Jam’s. The new jam site will link to all of the jam www.TennesseeConcerts.com/jam pages. The new jam site has a “Classifieds” section, if anyone is interested in putting a related add on it, at no charge. (All adds subject to approval). Send to our new jam email address.
Email: email@playitagainjam.vpweb.com . The next jam is Sunday January 25, 2009, beginning at 4pm (until around 8pm) at Windows Off The Cumberland, 515 Second Ave South, Nashville Tennessee. Help support the jam, and purchase Beer & Soft Drinks at the jam.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO MUSICIANS & OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES

Besides the Charlie Daniels Band, Barefoot Jerry has always been my favorite local Nashville band. With a mixture of country and rock, Barefoot Jerry had some of Nashville’s best musicians, in the 1970’s. Since many in the band were professional studio musicians, they rarely played outside of this region, and chose not to tour. This hurt them commercially, as this band could keep up with the best of ‘em. I was lucky enough to see Barefoot Jerry many times in the early ’70’s. I first saw Barefoot Jerry in Martin Tennessee, on the football field, with other southern rock bands including Wet Willie, headliners the Charlie Daniels Band, and others. I later attended Barefoot Jerry’s “Barefoot In The Park” at the Centennial Park bandshell, a free concert in which most of the audience was barefooted. The concert was so crowded, we couldn’t see. My friends and myself, just sat on the grass and listened to the concert. I went to see Barefoot Jerry many times in the 1970’s at Nashville’s Exit In on Elliston Place, a music venue that remains to this day. I cannot tell you which members played at which shows, as the band was always rotating members. I can tell you, that Wayne Moss played at all of the shows. Needless to say, it was always a great show whoever was playing. I only regret not ever taking a camera. The albums were great! “Grocery” was hot in the 1970’s, a double album repackaged from Barefoot Jerry’s first two LP’s “Southern Delight” & “Barefoot Jerry”. This CD includes early Barefoot Jerry, including “Hospitality Song”, “The Minstrel Is Here At Last” and others by singer/songwriter Mac Gayden. Some of my favorite Wayne Moss songs include “Warm”, “Ain’t It Nice In Here”, “One Woman” and others. A great CD, all the way through. Barefoot Jerry’s 2nd CD includes the LP’s “Watchin’ TV” and “You Can’t Get Off With Your Shoes On”. I love this CD, also. Both (album) title songs received airplay in the ’70’s, and what a great pair of albums to put together. Other great songs include “If There Were Only Time For Love”, “Faded Love”, “There Must Be A Better Way” (one of my favorites), and many more, including a few nice sounding instrumental songs. I do not have the last CD yet, but plan to buy it very soon. The CD includes the LP’s “Keys To The Country” and “Barefootin’”. I’m not that familiar with the two albums, but if Barefoot Jerry recorded it, it must be good. I’ve recently noticed that Wayne Moss has released a Barefoot Jerry live at the Exit In CD on www.barefootjerry.com from the old days. To this day, The Charlie Daniels Band is heard on the radio daily singing the quote “And all the good people down in Tennessee, are diggin’ Barefoot Jerry and the CDB”. Many in Nashville would agree. That quote that was definitely true in the 1970’s. In the mid-80’s, Danny Jones (founder of the Creekers Ball) and myself (Pat Adams) called Wayne Moss, and tried to persuade him to put together a Barefoot Jerry reunion for the annual Creekers Ball (a charity event, at the time). Although, Wayne was very nice, and seemed to enjoy talking about Barefoot Jerry, he declined to play solo, or with Barefoot Jerry. He stated that he does not perform live anymore. Well, at least we gave it a shot! Mac Gayden had a hit with “Morning Glory”, has had four great albums, and has written songs including “She Shot A Hole In My Soul” and the classic, “Everlasting Love”. I have seen Mac Gayden several times since his Barefoot Jerry days, once solo in the ’80’s at Mississippi Whiskers on Church Street in Nashville, and in 2004 at the Nashville’s historic Belcourt Theatre. He now plays with his new band Zenphonic which includes his daughter Oceana Gayden and his son Mac Gayden Jr. I’ve seen Zenphonic many times, and they are really good. Members of Barefoot Jerry have included many Nashville musicians, since they could not keep the same lineup together for over seven gigs. Members included Wayne Moss, Mac Gayden, John Harris, Kenny Buttrey, Jim Calvard, Russ Hicks, Charlie McCoy, Charlie Skipper, Terry Dearmore. Bobby Thompson, Fred Newell, Dave Doran, Kenny Malone, Si Edwards, Barry Chance, Mike McBride, John Moss, Warren Hartman, Steve Davis and others.

See our information on The Beatles 1966 concert in Memphis. I remember when The Beatles came to Tennessee, but was a little too young to go. The Tennessean (Nashville newspaper) ran an article on the 40 year anniversary. I also ran across some YouTube video of The Beatles in Memphis. I never knew such video even existed. The Beatles had their share of problems while in Memphis, and decided around this time to no longer tour.

Tennessean Newspaper from 40 year anniversary (Click to enlarge)

By John Beifuss from The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Published in the Tennessean, Aug 20, 2006
It was 40 years ago, and the city of Memphis didn’t want the band to play. At least that was the official stance the mayor and Board of Commissioners took in a unanimous resolution passed August 10, 1966, to express “official disapproval” and “advised The Beatles that they are not welcome in the City of Memphis.” The Blue Meanies didn’t stand a chance. On August 19, 1966, Britain’s Beatles - Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon - performed two concerts at the Mid-South Coliseum, at 4 and 8:30pm. Tickets were $5.50. The Memphis date was the eighth in a 14-city tour that would be the last ever for the band that remains the most influential in rock history. For each Memphis show, the Beatles performed 11 songs in about 28 minutes, after almost two hours of music from an interesting roster of opening acts: the Ronettes; Boston garage greats the Remains; Pennsylvania bubblegum popsters the Cyrkle (”Red Rubber Ball”); and Nashville R&B singer Bobby Hebb (”Sunny”). The first show attracted 7,589 fans; the second, 12,539. Disc Jockey George Klein and Johnny Dark acted as master of ceremonies. When The Beatles took the stage, “It kind of reminded me of the movie “King Kong” when all the flashbulbs started going off,” Dark later remembered. “There were so many flashbulbs it was almost like a strobe light.” Onstage, the Beatles - wearing “modish dull/grey suits” in the afternoon and “dark green creations with chartreuse shirts” at night, according to the local newspaper - exchanged such familiar hits as “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “A Hard Days Night” for mostly newer material. The songs performed in Memphis apparently were “Rock And Roll Music”, “She’s A Woman”, “If I Needed Someone”, “Day Tripper”, “Baby’s In Black”, “I Feel Fine”, “Yesterday”, “I Wanna Be Your Man”, “Nowhere Man”, “Paperback Writer”, and “Long Tall Sally”. The Commercial Appeal reported in a front-page story the next morning: “The musical performance of the long-haired Englishmen was hard to judge as the shrieks and screams of the paying guest almost drowned them out.” During a between-shows press conference, McCartney noted that “little things like money” had prevented the Beatles from recording what would become the album “Revolver” at Stax in Memphis. Lennon said The Beatles admiration for the guitar playing of Steve Cropper was one of the reasons they wanted to record in Memphis. However, Atlantic Vice President Gerald Wexler told The Commercial Appeal that Beatles manager Brian Epstien cancelled tentative plans for a two-week studio session at Stax because “he was not pleased with the security and housing plans he found during a one-day visit to Memphis.” The anti-Beatles resolution which described Memphis as “a City of Churches” was inspired by Lennon’s then much-publicized remark that The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus now. …I don’t know which will go first, rock and roll or Christianity.” In the days leading to the Memphis shows, The Commercial Appeal reported on several “Beatle burnings” in reaction to Lennon - protest rallies in which Beatles records were broken and burned (”Foot in Moptop’s Mouth Is Hot One,” stated a headline). Eighty police officers worked the show. “I’ve never had so much security at an event, even Bob Hope,” promoter Early Maxwell said.

We had the best table in the place (front/center) and got some great pictures of Ringo, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright, Billy Squire and others. What a show, Act Naturally, It Don’t Come Easy, What Goes On, Photograph, Oh My My, Boys, I Wanna Be Your Man, Liverpool 8, With A Little Help from My Friends and more. Speaking of help from friends, Edgar Winter did sung Free Ride and did an 8 minute version of Frankenstein (playing keyboards/sax/drums), Gary Wright did Dream Weaver & Love Is Alive, Billy Squire did The Stroke, Colin Hay performed Who Can It Be Now & Land Down Under, and Hamish Stuart played Pick Up The Pieces. The band did more of their hits, also.
Video footage of the first on-stage reunion of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the 1977 plane crash. I was right in front of the stage & first to unearth this rare footage and give it to Tony Beasley to post on YouTube. Tony was the first person on YouTube to post this reunion of the survivors, from the Charlie Daniels Band Volunteer Jam in 1979. This was from a Volunteer Jam Special, aired on TV soon afterwards. Due to the length of the song “Freebird”, Tony had to post it on 2 video’s. Check out part 2, also. January 21, 1979 : 1st Reunion of Lynyrd Skynyrd at the
Charlie Daniels Band, Volunteer Jam V
2008 brings the 5th anniversary of TennesseeConcerts. The music web site began in 2003 after posting pictures of Hermans Hermits (along with pictures of singer Peter Noone & myself) at the Tennessee State Fair in 2002. Legendary Nashville Disc Jockey Coyote McCloud hosted that show. Months later he introduced TennesseeConcerts to Nashville through his Nashville oldies
morning radio show. This was at a time when I had ONE page of pictures for each decade. The site may have had a dozen or so pages, at that time. We now have 300 pages in 2008. Thanks Coyote! Where are you now? During the past five years we have accomplished a lot. We currently rank in the top “Tennessee Concerts” & “Nashville Concerts” search engine
searches in Yahoo & Google. We also rank in the top 1% of “Nashville Tennessee” web sites. We rank near (or at) the top of search engine results for many top artists, as well as the “Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash”. It is not uncommon for us to receive emails from artists management, webmasters, and sometimes from the artists themselves. We have sponsored the “Play It Again Jam” for two years. The Jams have included many local talanted musicians. I took up playing the tambourine so I could jam, too. I got to Jam with musicians that had performed with the Charlie Daniels Band, the Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd & JJ Cale. How cool is that,
for someone who is not a musician. We hope to keep the Jam pages current, with the latest projects, from the jam musicians themselves. Check out our latest pictures of The House Cats at Music City Nights. The House Cats features players from the “Play It Again Jam” including jam host Gary Allen (from the CDB & JJ Cale). Our most popular pages are our Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern Tribute pages. I have just renewed the www.southerntribute.com domain for
this site. We have rare news reports of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, plus never before seen pictures of the plane crash scene. We are the first media outlet to publish these historic photo’s. We plan to release 4 more of these photographs in the upcoming month.
The pictures and information was supplied to me by, Jacquelyn Cooper in Mississippi. She retreived much of the information from the family attic, as the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crashed on property, owned by her family. Our Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash page gets more hits than our
TennesseeConcerts home page, a very popular page in the internet.
The five year anniversary brings a new look to the web site, with new pages, including our new Store. We only have a couple of items in the store, but plan to have CD’s and other items soon. We will also feature a Nashville Concert Calender page of upcoming Nashville concerts. We also hope to start selling ad space and promoting artists in the near future, moving us up into
another level on the Nashville Music Scene.
Feel free to send me an email anytime at pat@tennesseeconcerts.com (no spam please).
I’ve started a new TennesseeConcerts blog. I will be writing on concert and music related items. I welcome your comments.
